Estela de Luz, Mexico City: What to See and Getting There

Estela de Luz: Mexico City’s Bicentennial Monument and Digital Culture Center

Estela de Luz, the “Pillar of Light”, is the monument built for the Bicentennial of Mexico’s Independence: a 104-meter tower made of two slender blades clad in quartz panels, on Paseo de la Reforma by the entrance to Chapultepec Park. It was unveiled in January 2012, more than a year late, and the Centro de Cultura Digital operates at its base. It’s 850 m from Hotel Emma Boutique.

  • Stand on the plaza to take in Chapultepec’s Lion Gate and Torre Mayor, across Reforma.
  • Walk east along Paseo de la Reforma, with its sculptures and tree-lined medians.
  • Take photos at sunset, when the quartz shifts tone with the light.
