Estadio Banorte is the same old Estadio Azteca, renamed after its sponsor. It’s in Santa Úrsula, in the south of the city, and it’s the only stadium to have hosted matches at three World Cups: 1970, 1986 and 2026. During the 2026 World Cup, FIFA called it Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Ciudad de México); after the tournament it went back to Estadio Banorte. It’s 15 km from Hotel Emma Boutique, reachable by Metro and light rail.

About the stadium
- It hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals, and on June 11, 2026 it opened its third World Cup with Mexico’s 2–0 win over South Africa.
- It reopened on March 28, 2026, after about 20 months of renovation, with a Mexico vs. Portugal match. It has about 87,000 seats.
- In the 2026 Apertura season, América, Cruz Azul and Atlante play their home games here, as does América’s women’s team. Check the Liga MX schedule.
- It also hosts large concerts and Mexico national team matches.
Getting there from Hotel Emma Boutique
- Metro: walk 200 m to Sevilla station and take Line 1 toward Pantitlán to Pino Suárez. Change to Line 2 toward Tasqueña and ride to the end of the line.
- Light rail: at Tasqueña, take the Tren Ligero toward Xochimilco and get off at Estadio Azteca, which connects to the stadium entrances. You pay with the same Integrated Mobility Card used on the Metro.
- Alternative: Metrobús Line 1 south to Félix Cuevas, Metro Line 12 from Insurgentes Sur to Ermita, then Line 2 to Tasqueña. This is the route the city’s official guide suggests from Roma and Condesa.
- Taxi or app: about 15 km via Tlalpan or Periférico. Roads close on match days, so ask to be dropped a few blocks away.
Allow more than an hour on public transit. Special light-rail operations may apply on event days; check Servicio de Transportes Eléctricos notices before you go.
Getting back at night
The Metro closes at midnight, so after evening matches or concerts public transit may not get you all the way back. Have a taxi or app plan. The city’s mobility guide suggests walking a few blocks or riding the light rail a couple of stops north before ordering a ride: Calzada de Tlalpan jams up and fares rise right after events.
Tips
- Arrive at least two hours early: security lines at a full stadium take time.
- Carry a small bag. Outside food and drinks, umbrellas, aerosols, professional cameras and sharp objects are generally not allowed; check the event’s rules.
- Bring your digital ticket, a charged phone and ID.
- Cover up from the sun at midday matches and bring a jacket for night games.
Near the hotel
The trip starts at Sevilla Metro station, 200 m from the hotel. If you’re staying a few days, the Frida Kahlo Museum is also in the south of the city, in Coyoacán.
