Arena México, in Colonia Doctores, is home to the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and is known as the Cathedral of Lucha Libre. The current building opened in 1956, seats about 16,500 people and hosted boxing at the 1968 Olympic Games. Catching a show, with masks, chants and dives off the top rope, is one of the most fun nights out in the city. It’s 2.4 km from Hotel Emma Boutique.

What to expect at a show
- A card of several bouts that builds up to the main event, often a six-man tag match.
- Técnicos versus rudos, good guys versus bad guys: the crowd picks sides, cheers and boos, and that’s part of the show.
- Viernes Espectacular (Friday) is the week’s main show; Sunday’s afternoon start makes it a good choice with kids.
- Stalls selling masks and souvenirs around the arena on Calle Doctor Lavista.
- A venue with history: wrestling has been held here since 1956, and CMLL has promoted lucha libre since 1933, when it was still called EMLL.
How to buy tickets
Tickets are sold online through Ticketmaster and at the arena’s box offices on Calle Doctor Lavista, which open on show days. Check the current schedule on CMLL’s official site (cmll.com): programming can change, and special events such as the September anniversary show have their own dates. Buy only through these channels and avoid street resellers.
Getting there from Hotel Emma Boutique
By Metro: walk 200 m to Sevilla station and take Line 1 toward Pantitlán. Get off two stops later at Cuauhtémoc. From there, cross Avenida Cuauhtémoc into Colonia Doctores; the arena is at Doctor Lavista 189, a few minutes’ walk away. Metrobús Line 3 also stops nearby, at Cuauhtémoc and Balderas.
By taxi or ride-hailing app: about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic. It’s the most comfortable option, especially for the ride back.
On foot: 2.4 km, roughly 30 minutes. Fine by day, but we don’t recommend it at night.
Getting back safely at night
- Colonia Doctores has poorly lit streets: after the show, don’t walk around the area, even though the hotel isn’t far.
- Request your ride a few minutes before the last bout ends and wait inside or by the exit, with the crowd; demand spikes at the end.
- If you take the Metro back, walk with the crowd straight to Cuauhtémoc station. The Metro closes at midnight.
- Carry little cash, keep your phone put away and valuables out of sight. If you’re in a group, agree on a meeting point at the exit.
Tips for your visit
- Arrive early: entry and security checks can take a while, especially on Fridays.
- Check your ticket for what you’re allowed to bring into the arena.
- Buy a mask before you go in and wear it during the show: it’s part of the fun.
- On Sundays the show ends early, leaving time for dinner in Roma Norte.
